B.I.G. project space presents, trans·par·ent, Curated by Konstantinos Dagritzikos and Aikaterini Gegisian The project focuses on the processes of looking and making visible, from observation as an instance in the creative process to surveillance as the ‘necessary condition’. In a contemporary landscape of saturation, trans·par·ent reflects on the documents, images, processes and residues generated by the workings of perception. The conceptual framework of the show was formulated in January 2006 from a discussion on urban surveillance and its effects on artistic methodologies and on the contemporary art viewer. In this context, the relation between artist and viewer was seen as a circular manifestation of looking and of being seen. Although, Aikaterini and Konstantinos initiated the curatorial process, the development was determined by dialogue between the artists and their ongoing work. In searching for new ways of seeing, the project looks at real and virtual boarders, movement and the mapping of space, displacement and memory, the production and consumption of images, reality and fiction. In its first presentation the works took the form of installations, single-screen videos, sculpture and print and presented an opportunity to contemplate on art’s ability to make visible the unimaginable and on the image’s ability to reflect back at us. And in paraphrasing Homi K. Bhabba ‘In a world in which we see, we are endlessly creating ourselves’ trans·par·ent was initially presented at B.I.G. project space in Athens, Greece, on May/June 2006 and participating artists were: Youngmi Chun (South Korea), Konstantinos Dagritzikos (Greece), Charela Diaz (Spain), Dimitris Foutris (Greece), Aikaterini Gegisian (Greece), Rui Inacio (Portugal), Dimitris Ioannou (Greece), Tim Jukes (UK) and Philipa Martin (South Africa). From the first place it was the curators’ intention for the show to take up a nomadic character after its closing and travel to other project spaces around Europe and further. Every curator that will be asked to host trans·par·ent in his/her space has to add a new element to its initial formulation by proposing one or more new artists to participate in the show. All the artists taking part in trans·par·ent’s first edition will be asked to participate again but with new works. The whole show will reflect upon its own character by constantly evolving and recycling its concept, artists and artworks.
